The German manager is now England's third foreign coach in history, and he spoke to fans for the first time at a press conference today.

Tuchel previously managed Chelsea between 2021 and 2022, helping the west Londoners clinch the Champions League, Club World Cup and Super Cup.

The 51-year-old, considered by many to be an elite manager, has also previously been in charge of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.

Tuchel’s appointment has not attracted universal praise due to his German roots, but the former Bayern coach sought to ease any concerns, while addressing questions over whether or not he will sign the national anthem.

Relive all the reaction from his appointment and quotes from his press conference below.

Thomas Tuchel’s new England salary revealed as he takes huge pay cutSort:Newest firstOldest first October 16, 2024 3:13 pm Goodbye! Ben Fleming

A busy day for Thomas Tuchel and England but that’s all from us. We won’t see the German in the dugout until next year but there’ll be plenty more reaction and analysis of his appointment before then.

Until next time…

October 16, 2024 3:09 pm When will Tuchel’s first match take place? Ben Fleming

Given he doesn’t officially begin until January, Tuchel’s first matches in charge will arrive during the following international break in March 2025.

The German will oversee a pair of 2026 World Cup qualifiers, but England’s opponents are not yet known.

October 16, 2024 2:54 pm Carragher ‘It just doesn’t feel right to me’ Ben Fleming

Jamie Carragher becomes the latest to voice his concern about what Tuchel’s appointment says about the quality of English coaches right now:

“It just doesn’t feel right to me that we have a foreign coach”

— Football (@SkyFootball) October 16, 2024 October 16, 2024 2:42 pm Tuchel an ‘interesting’ choice – Gary Lineker Ben Fleming

‘It is an interesting appointment. There is no doubt that he is an elite coach as he has won things, including the Champions League with Chelsea, so he is to be respected,’ the former England striker told BBC Sport.

‘Obviously people will debate whether England should have an English coach, and having a German one is interesting, so we will have to see how it pans out.”

‘He is a different kind of manager to Southgate. He will be more of an aggressive coach in terms of playing on the front foot. He is tactically wise and I think he will be more offensive than Southgate.

‘It will be interesting to see if he can make them gel and believe in themselves.’

October 16, 2024 2:29 pm Pictures from the presser Ben Fleming October 16, 2024 2:21 pm Harry Kane speaks out Ben Fleming

Tuchel may not have spoken to the England captain, who he worked with at Bayern, before accepting the role, but Kane appears happy to be reunited with the German:

Looking forward to playing under the boss again! https://t.co/mIQOhWKNMz

If you’re just joining us, you can read the thoughts of Thomas Tuchel below from his first press conference.

And if you’re wondering whether the German will be belting out ‘God Save the King’ you need not scroll any further:

Will Thomas Tuchel sing the national anthem? New England manager gives honest answer in first press conference October 16, 2024 2:04 pm That’s all for now Ben Fleming

Clearly still plenty of questions to come for Tuchel but that’s all for this portion of his press conference.

October 16, 2024 2:01 pm Has he spoken to Harry Kane yet? Ben Fleming

‘I spoke to no one [during the hiring process]. We kept the process very confidential. I did not speak to Harry nor Gareth [Southgate].

“It’s too early to answer these sorts of questions. You know how highly I think of Harry and how hard I fought to bring him to Bayern Munich. He is already on his way to being a legend in English football.

‘It’s also very important to give respect to Lee [Carsley, interim manager until end of year] and the upcoming camp so he can take his decisions freely, without me interfering.’

October 16, 2024 1:59 pm Tuchel addresses Man Utd links Ben Fleming

‘The idea and the way John and Mark presented it was very fast and exciting, it was very confidential and very trustful, Tuchel says

‘It was very straightforward and that was basically a decision for this job and not against anything else. You understand I will not comment on individual players today and not comment on any other clubs.

October 16, 2024 1:55 pm On the length of his contract Ben Fleming

‘Well let’s see it’s 18 months then we agreed to sit together and we will see,’ Tuchel says.

‘I have good experience with 18 months personally but also unfortunately sometimes. I’m working on my long-term game.

‘In this case it is important for me to have a frame around it as it is a step into the unknown for me as I am used to managing on a daily basis with staff and players and this will be very different.’

October 16, 2024 1:53 pm Tuchel – ‘I understand why people might fancy an English coach’ Ben Fleming

‘I can understand it but I think we deserve a fair chance and the credit for having a good record in the country and never being shy of how much we love to live in the country and how much we enjoy working with players in the Premier League.

‘Maybe this counts a bit for a British edge on my passport. We will try to convince them by results and the way we play.’

October 16, 2024 1:49 pm Taking inspiration from club football Ben Fleming

‘Maybe this is the moment to add from club football [the] patterns, behaviours and principles that can maybe help to push the team over the line.

‘We will need luck and momentum and little decisions within games but we feel confident to add something from our experience in club football.’

October 16, 2024 1:47 pm Why did Tuchel move to international management? Ben Fleming

‘I was not sure before if this was a job for me (not club football) but we found many things that suited me. I always wanted to come back to England, that was a big goal, the attitude to the game and the supporters here are one of a kind.

‘Now I have to live up to to. I know there are some trophies missing and I want to make it happen.’

October 16, 2024 1:45 pm Tuchel addresses whether he will sing the national anthem Ben Fleming

The big question.

‘I understand from Mark that it’s a personal decision first of all,’ Tuchel says. ‘There were managers who sang it and others who didn’t. I have not made my decision yet.

‘Your anthem is very moving I experienced it several times at Wembley with the players at the FA Cup final. it was very touching – no matter what decision I make, I will always show my respect to my new role and to the country. But I will take a little time for this decision.’

October 16, 2024 1:41 pm ‘We will build on Southgate’s legacy’ Ben Fleming

Tuchel says he will not tear the house down as he looks to build on Southgate’s process.

‘I will build on it. Gareth and the FA did a superb job – look at the last results in tournaments – it’s outstanding. It was a big part of taking the job. We’ll build on it and hopefully add a little bit extra to get it over the line,’ he says.

Asked whether his nationality could be an issue, he adds: ‘I’m sorry but I only have a German passport. But everyone knows my passion for the English Premier League and how I loved to work here.

‘Hopefully I can prove to them how much I love to be England manager. The target is the biggest one in world football.’

October 16, 2024 1:39 pm On the recruitment process Ben Fleming

Bullingham says there were around ten coaches interviewed for the role and added: ‘We were always clear we wanted the best person for the job and we owed that to players and the country and we feel we’ve done that.’

October 16, 2024 1:36 pm Tuchel ‘excited’ to start in January Ben Fleming

‘I’m very excited and honoured to be here as new head coach of England. I read a quote from Pele at the entrance saying Wembley is the heart of football and I agree,’ Tuchel says in his opening remarks.

‘I understood very quickly it is a big job and it feels like a privilege. It’s very new as I come from club football, that is very exciting.’

October 16, 2024 1:35 pm And he’s here… Ben Fleming

FA CEO Mark Bullingham is speaking first. He hails it as ‘an exciting day for the English game’ and says in Tuchel they have appointed ‘one of the best coaches in the world.’

He confirms that the FA signed a deal with Tuchel last Tuesday and said they were impressed by Tuchel’s ‘outstanding and clear vision for the role and thanks Lee Carsley for his commitment to the interim role.

October 16, 2024 1:26 pm Tuchel coming up shortly Ben Fleming
